Mono Lake
Here we are at Mono Lake. Did you know Mono is oldest lake in North America? It is at least 760,000 years old, and probably more like 1-3 million years old!
In 1941, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began diverting Mono Lake's tributary streams 350 miles south to meet the growing water demands of Los Angeles.
Deprived of its freshwater sources, the volume of Mono Lake halved, while its salinity doubled.
It is now 45 feet below the level of the lake, pre-diversion. That is why there are tufa towers above ground. It gives you a very clear picture of how much deeper and wider the lake used to be.
Kate hitching a ride from cousin Brian. He's home from college and joined us for the trip to Mammoth.
I really like this picture. I'm not sure what it is, but the sky always looks so interesting/dramatic at Mono Lake.
Brian and Kate became buddies by the end of the week.
Double click on this picture (then hit the back arrow). Kate just looks so happy, completely oblivious to the guys in the background. I think she has a piece of licorice in her hand.
Sometimes Ryan and Kate are exhausting together, and sometimes...
